Donkey Sanctuary

We went to the Donkey sanctuary on Saturday ....some friends of ours had been given a donkey adoption for christmas so of course we had to go visit him!!!
Mum was up for the skite and was really looking forward to using her christmas pressie which is a sat-nav.... Dad had set it up for us and after checking in with our friends to make sure we were all on the same track so to speak, we set off towards Mitchelstown.... the sanctuary is near Mallow.
Well himself(Tomtom)didnt like this at all and kept asking us to turn around or go off up forest tracks etc.....we trundled on ignoring untill he came around to our way of thimking (just past the roundabout by Mitchelstown) but none of us could judge the distances so when he said turn left in 300 yards Mum would say "left here!!!!! " and we ended up on small roads with grass growing up the middle with strange men standing in gateways miles from any house..... then we turned off the voice my mistake and when we came to a cross roads I said to Mum "where now?" "Left" was the answer, so left we went ....... we were supposed to come to Buttervent, but passed a sign saying we were going in the opposite direction. when we pulled over to investigate further ....we should have gone straight on at the cross but Mum didnt like the look of it !!!! I dont think I have ever laughed so much on a journey.
Eventually we made it to the Donkey Santuary and as the day was just beautiful ,if a little cold, we had a fantastic time.If ye get a chance its a great day out and so well maintained and managed. The donkeys all came over to the children to be petted and the views were breathtaking. We had a cup of coffee, the kids had hot chocolate and ate our picnic in the visitors centre and Paddy the owner came out to talk to us which was really nice and told us about the history of the place. The kids had their photos taken with Richie their donkey and we followed our friends home lol

  1. Hi Julie. Thanks for your kind comment on my blog.

Your cross-country adventures reminded me of the best book I have read about Ireland, Round Ireland in Low Gear by Eric Newby. He has the excellent quote from an old-time guide to touring Ireland, that a particular route from Bally-something to Killie-something "is generally level, with a strong upward tendency".

The donkeys on the website are beautiful, such a good cause isn't it? Happy new year from your new follower.
